Joe K. Bryant Students Collects Money for the National Audubon Society
   submitted 4/26/2012

Pennies for the Planet, supported by the National Audubon Society, is a successful nationwide campaign to help critical conservation projects. It’s powered by kids collecting pennies (and nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars, too!) to help save wild places and wildlife in the United States. Joe K. Bryant student council challenged the students at school to bring in as many coins & dollars as they could to help support the cause. After two weeks of collection, the money was counted and JKB student council will be donating $1706.44 to the National Audubon Society.

Congratulations to Anthony Alvarado...

...who did his Gifted and Talented Performance Standard Exit Project on “The Importance of Education within the Hispanic Culture.”  Anthony came and spoke to the Hurricane Creek Rotary Club on April 12, 2012 about his subject.  He started off by sharing that even though his mother only has a 6th grade education and speaks Spanish, she still taught her kids how important it is to stay involved in school.  Anthony has done that very thing as he participates in our award winning band program, our newly formed soccer team, and our individualized Gifted and Talented program.  He also went over statistics of the Hispanic population in Anna, Celina, Howe, and Van Alstyne.  He shared census bureau statistics about the growth of the Hispanic population by the year 2050.  He challenged members of the Rotary Club to look for ways to mentor and involve Hispanics in their community and church.
